Walk description

We leave Hartington walking up past the Youth Hostel on High Cross and soon turn into Highfield Lane (track) which takes us to Dale End and the top of Biggin Dale. We follow Biggin Dale until it meets Wolfscote Dale which we follow alongside the River Dove. We continue to Milldale which is at the top of Dove Dale but then turn towards Alstonefield. There is a very short steep climb and at the top take a path across a field to the back of Alstonefield Church.

Depending on progress, we may take lunch on the village green in front of the George Inn! We will then continue north with a little road walking and then on paths to Beresford Dale and back to Hartington.

A 10 mile walk in around 5 hours which is moderate and mainly on lanes and paths through the dales, but with a little road walking. This is a good time for bird-watching for anyone with that interest – Redstart, Wheatear, Woodpeckers, Little Owl, Chats, Dippers and Wagtails may all be seen in the dales. The scenery through the dales is spectacular.
