Oughtibridge and Beeley Wood
We will walk along the side of the River Don through Great Hollins Wood and Beeley Wood. Look for signs of old industries along this route – there were also a number of Ganister Mines in the woods – Ganister was used to make ‘fire bricks’ for lining the inside of the furnaces in the steel works. We will see the old ‘ford’ across the river near to Rocher Bridge which was part of the original toll road into the industrial area.
From here there is a short climb up steps on an old ‘miners path’ to a footbridge over the railway line which used to be the Sheffield to Manchester and Huddersfield line – now owned and used by the steel company for transporting steel between Rotherham and Stocksbridge for processing. From here we will walk up a gentle hill towards Lower Hurst and then walk through the woods to Oughtibridge Lane. We will walk passed the Intermet Refractory works briefly into Wharncliffe Woods and then return to our starting point.
