Dismantled railway line, Sheephouse Wood, Underbank, Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire
Date: Thursday, 21st March 2019
Start time: 10:45
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 7.0 miles
Walk description

We start with a scenic walk across Underbank Reservoir dam wall before following the path alongside the reservoir to the village of Midhopestones (Middop). We walk through the village passing the 14th century St James’ Church followed by a steady climb to enjoy extensive views across the valley.

We proceed into woodland and have a short steep ascent before the path levels out and descends with views of Midhope Reservoir into open countryside. We cross the River Porter (Little Don) and join the disused railway line built in the late 19th century during the construction of Langsett Reservoir, to return through Sheephouse Wood and alongside Underbank Reservoir to our starting point.

There is a short drive to the village of Bolsterstone for a well-earned beverage at the Castle Inn if desired.
