Starting from The Farmer’s Boy car park we walk beside Shepley Cricket Ground to join the Kirklees Way en route to the hamlet of Fulstone. We cross farmland and pass through woodlands before the short climb to Thurstonland village, continuing over fields to Heights Farm. From here we have a section of minor road walking, passing a Grade ll listed Guide Post dating from 1738, showing distances to ‘Penny∫tone’ and ‘Hudder∫field,’ before continuing along field paths to cross Clough Dike. We walk along the edge of Smith Wood and pass through Joy Wood, Boothroyd Wood and Saville Wood, following Thunderbridge Dike through Lower Hartley Bank Wood to Thunderbridge Meadows. We then have a short section of road walking before taking a woodland path for our return to Shepley and optional debrief at The Farmer’s Boy.
This is a 7.5 mile moderate walk on woodland paths, quiet minor roads and farmland. It will take approximately 3.5 hours plus lunch stop. It is an undulating walk with extensive views of the Kirklees countryside and the moorland across to Holme Moss. There are several stiles.
