From the car park we walk along Sheephill Road and onto Houndkirk Road, an unmade road that was built in 1758 as a ‘turnpike road’ and which has never been surfaced with modern materials. After a short distance we turn right into Lady Canning Plantation and follow a wide path uphill. At the top side of the plantation we cross Ringinglow Road and follow the footpath passed Brown Edge Farm, with extensive views over Sheffield and further afield, until meeting Fulwood Lane. We then join a permitted path over Rud Hill and on to open moorland towards Redmires Reservoirs. Here we take the old Roman road up to Stanage Pole. We continue until reaching Stanage Edge and turn left to follow the Edge until reaching Cowper Stones and then continue to Upper Burbage Bridge. We now take a footpath beneath Burbage Rocks until turning east on a faint footpath to Houndkirk Road again which we follow back to the car park.
This is an excellent walk with extensive views and scenery throughout (weather permitting). The walk is moderate/strenuous and follows paths but some paths are across moorland and rocks and appropriate footwear is recommended. It will take 4.5 to 5 hours.
