Walk description

Starting from the car park we walk beside Thurlstone Road to the entrance to Stottercliffe Cemetery, then make our way uphill to the Trans Pennine trail. We cross Penistone Showground and follow field edge paths to Hornthwaite Hill, from where we descend towards Thurlstone village. We now have a long, but gradual ascent with spectacular views over Millhouse Green and the Langsett moors, to reach the viewpoint at Royd Moor, the highpoint of our walk. From here we have 360-degree panoramic views.
We have a gentle descent through open farmland, before following the woodland path around Royd Moor Reservoir and continuing through fields overlooking Scout Dike Reservoir. Skirting Thurlstone village we pass through fields and across a footbridge over the River Don to return to our starting point.

This is a moderate walk of just over 7 miles on field and woodland paths and bridleways, with short sections of road walking along quiet country lanes. It will take around 3.5 hours plus lunch stop.
