Walk description

Starting from Marsden Railway Station, we pick up the towpath at the side of Colne Canal to reach Tunnel End Cafe. This is at one end of the longest canal tunnel in the UK that is still in use. From here we continue onto Hey Green where we turn onto a moorland track on Close Moss. From here it is a 2 mile ascent with a total height gain of 650ft until we reach the A640 road. We then turn left onto the Pennine Way along Standedge where we will get (weather permitting) views over Castleshaw Reservoirs. This is where we will take lunch.

We continue and cross the A62 road turning at Black Moss reservoir to pick up the Kirkless Way and pass Butterley Reservoir on our return into Marsden.

The route is mainly on moorland tracks with short distances on a canal towpath and tarmaced road. Approximately 6 hours including lunch stop.
