Alport Castles
Date: Sunday, 6th September 2020
Start time: 09:30
Grade: Strenuous
Distance: 10.0 miles
Walk description

From the car park layby Grid ref: SK 174 889, we have a steady climb through Hagg Side wood, over Bellhag Tor, Pasture Tor and, hopefully, have fine views of Alport Castles. This is Britain’s largest natural landslide of just over half a mile in length and gritstone of 300 million years old. It’s often windy so remember hats.

The descent from here leads to Alport Farm, then an easy path traversing the valley towards the A57 Snake road. After crossing, we ascend on the Glossop to Hope Roman road, and then take a left path just before Hope Cross. This next section is a stony route through the Woodlands Valley before re-crossing the A57 passing Hagg Farm. A steep walk to the edge of Hagg Side woodland leads up to the final descent, then back to the car park.

Approx. 5.5 hours including lunch.
