Across Don Valley from Birley Edge, South Yorkshire
Date: Thursday, 13th October 2022
Start time: 10:30
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 6.25 miles
Walk description

This walk of 6.25 miles was one of our “lockdown walks” which goes through a park, churchyard, open fields and woodland to the vantage point of Jawbone Hill, at 816ft above the Don Valley, where there are excellent views towards Sheffield and the Upper Don Valley. The first half of the walk is steadily uphill and the second half downhill. From the park we go through Ecclesfield churchyard, following footpaths towards Grenoside and through Wheata Wood, to emerge above Hunter House Farm. There is then a steady descent downhill to Jawbone Hill and an ancient monument – The Birley Stone. The path continues downhill to the top end of Birley Edge, past lovely stone properties, and downwards towards Halifax Road and through fields to the bottom of The Wheel and a return to the starting point.
