We set off from Dovestone Reservoir and walk above the reservoir to Binn Green. We cross over the A635 and ascend to the Saddleworth War Memorial. The last part of the ascent is the steepest, but we can keep having a breather to take in the views over Dovestones. On reaching the memorial we will have completed the major ascents of the walk, and have covered just over 2 miles. We will have 5 minutes or so at the memorial itself before we continue over the moor towards Diggle with more extensive views.
On reaching Diggle we join the Huddersfield Canal, where will take lunch. Toilets are available by the canal. We continue along the canal until we reach Uppermill. We then have a short road section before joining the Pennine Bridleway through to Greenfield. We walk through Greenfield village itself. On reaching Greenfield we go off road again on public footpaths where there is a short but steep climb to the hamlet of Hey Top. Here we join a minor road to take us back to Dovestone Reservoir and a well deserved ice cream if the man is there!
This is a walk of about 10 miles taking approximately 4.5 hours including lunch break. The paths are good throughout though there are boggy sections on the top of the moor, but nothing to worry us.
