The two main features of the first part of the walk are: Werneth Low Country Park with its expansive views (too many to describe) and the Hackingknife War Memorial, erected in remembrance of the 710 men from Hyde who died in the two World Wars. The stone, (Cornish Granite), from which this obelisk is carved comes from the same quarries as the Cenotaph in London.
Etherow Country Park is a popular location for pastimes such as sailing, fishing and model boats. its amenities comprise toilets, a cafe and a gift shop.
After lunch which will be taken in the picnic area at the back of the Etherow Country Park near the weir, we move on to the second part of the walk of which the notable features are more expansive views, the part-derelict village of Holehouse and (just before we finish) Broadmills Heritage Site. The ruins of these textile mills, originally built in 1802-1824 were closed in 1860.
The route goes through wooded areas, across farmland, and includes stretches on paths, lanes and a short walk along a road.
This a 10.5 mile strenuous walk and will take approx 5.5 hours and includes some steep ascents.
