Date: Thursday, 21st February 2019
Start time: 10:45
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 6.0 miles
Walk description

From Common Lane car park we pass Parsonage Farm, established over 700 years ago, and walk across access land with extensive views over to Wharncliffe Crags and Chase, before reaching Townend Common, a local nature reserve.

We continue via Hollin Edge Farm, where in 1966 the BBC relayed World Cup football from Hillsborough to the Emley Moor mast, and begin to descend through woodland to reach the 16th century Bitholmes Wood.

We retrace our steps to our lunch stop beside the Wantley Dragon, mentioned in Sir Walter Scott’s ‘Ivanhoe’, and then climb through woodlands and cross fields towards Walder’s Low, believed to be the 5000 year old burial chamber of an Anglo Saxon chief. We have an easy return across Stocksbridge golf course to our starting point.

There is a short drive to the village of Bolsterstone for a well-earned beverage at the Castle Inn if desired.
