Starting from the Sitwell Arms in Whiston, we make our way up through Whiston and enter Canklow Woods. Climbing gradually through the wood we reach Boston Castle. We will take a short break here for a drink and weather permitting take in the views towards Sheffield. Descending out of the woods we cross the A631 and enter Blue Man’s Bower. After passing under the M1, we walk at the side of the River Rother before we enter Treeton village. There is a little road walking here before we pick up a path that takes us to Guilthwaite. From here we descend by the A618 road to Ulley Reservoir. Lunch will be taken at Ulley.
After lunch we walk the perimeter of the reservoir and take the gentle climb to Upper Whiston. We walk by road for about 300 yards here, where there is no pavement so care needs to be taken. On reaching Upper Whiston, we take an unmade track that leads us over the M1 and the descent back into Whiston and our starting point.
This is a 8 mile walk that will take 4-4.5 hours including lunch. Weather permitting there will be extensive views over Rotherham and Sheffield, especially from Boston Castle. The footpaths are good throughout. There is a 1/2 mile section walking at the side of the busy A618 but it is all paved and set back from the road.
