Leaving the Green Dragon Car Park, we walk along Halifax Road to join the Thurgoland Boundary path, descending through fields to the River Don. After passing through Stones Wood, we have a steady climb towards Holly Hall, then cross sheep fields to walk beside Tin Mill Dam. We pass under the A616 Stocksbridge By-Pass and walk beside the river before a gradual ascent to Wharncliffe Crags, where we have spectacular, far-reaching views across the valley. Leaving the crags, we have a gentle ascent to Hannah Moor and continue along a wide track overlooking Wharncliffe Reservoir, towards Gosling Moor. We walk by the Wortley Rugby pitches to reach Wortley village and return through Mill Moor Plantation to the Green Dragon for the debrief.
There are a few ups and downs, several stiles and a little road walking.
This is a moderate walk of approximately 8 miles, using well-defined footpaths and bridleways through fields and woodlands, with a short section of road walking. It will take around 4 hours plus lunch stop.
