Starting from the car park at Wooler Common, we immediately ascend through woodland to reach open moorland, where the terrain levels onto a well-defined track. Taking time to take in the 360-degree views, we continue on St Cuthbert’s Way eventually descending slightly to get to Commonburn House. Apparently, this was the location of some episodes of the TV detective series Vera. From here we cross open ground where there are nesting birds so care should be taken. After crossing a stream via a bridge, we continue to reach a raised rocky outcrop which is our second major ascent and lunch stop. We are about halfway round at this stage. After lunch we enjoy more 360 degree views and descend to Carey Burn, which is approximately two miles after lunch. Crossing the burn, we have our longest ascent. Taking our time on this part of the walk, we will have a breather and / or drink at the top. From here it’s approximately 1.5 miles of easy going back to our cars.
This is a lovely walk, where we pass through a variety of terrains. We walk along well defined moorland and woodland paths, through broom, and around a short section of craggy outcrops. The walk predominantly follows St. Cuthbert’s Way. It is undulating and has three steep ascents; two are relatively short, with the last being longer. There is a variety of birdlife to see including Curlews, Lapwings, Oystercatchers and Grouse.
