We leave the car park passing the Church of St. David, the start of the famous ‘Cote de Holme Moss’, one of the memorable climbs of the 2014 Tour de France, proceeding up Bank Lane and through a garden where chickens and ducks roam freely.
The woodland path follows a stream uphill with views of Brownhill and Digley Reservoirs before joining a farm track and passing through fields of sheep and beech woodland.
After crossing Dobb Dike, we continue on tracks and minor roads to Cartworth Moor Cricket Club, over 130 years old and one of the highest cricket grounds in the country.
We pass Rising Sun Farm and campsite and enjoy views across the valley to Upperthong and beyond on the long downhill stretch into Holmfirth.
We now have a short steep ascent up Wood Lane. We pass through the hamlet of Hill and continue along tracks to the village of Upperthong.
We leave the village on a farm track, cross the busy A635 Greenfield Road and join a minor road to descend to Hart Holes Clough. After a short climb we continue through beautiful wildflower meadows before the final descent to our starting point to enjoy a well-earned drink.
