From the station car park we proceed to Water Hall Park to view the impressive 29 arch Penistone viaduct which was officially opened in 1850. We continue to Nether Lea Farm, on to Cat Hill Lane and downhill to Gunthwaite, an ancient manor which passed, on marriage, to the Bosville family in 1374.
There are excellent views of the Gunthwaite valley as we approach Upper Denby and continue in the direction of Emley Moor television mast.
The walk culminates in a long descent along a bridle path to Denby Dale where we follow a path 112 feet beneath the railway viaduct. It was originally built of timber in the late 1840’s and replaced thirty years later, after many years of concern over its safety, by a 21 arch stone viaduct constructed by Naylor Bros.
There are steps up to Wakefield Road before the final stretch of our walk along to the White Hart, where we have permission to eat our own lunch inside or outside the pub.
There is a climb up to the station for our train which will depart at 2.35pm, arriving at Penistone station at 2.42pm.
This is an easy / moderate walk of approximately 5 miles from Penistone to Denby Dale. It has several stiles and some inclines and descents. It uses footpaths, minor country lanes and crosses open farmland. The walk will take around 2.5 – 3 hours, with a lunch stop at the end of the walk before our return by train (cost £3.50).
