Leaving the car park we walk uphill to the village of Tideswell, to then pass through a series of fields, with plenty of stiles, but many of them of the ‘squeeze’ variety. Eventually reaching a road we then have a short downhill section (no pavement). A steepish uphill on a grassy bank then stony track takes us to the village of Wormhill, where we will take our lunch break at the seated area and memorial to canal engineer James Brindley. The route then takes us through woodland and a steep rocky path down to cross the River Wye, and up to the Monsal Trail. We’re on the Trail for a couple of miles, which can get quite busy with cyclists. Dropping down to cross back over the river, we make our way along Tideswell Dale and back to the return.
