We first have to cross the A629 and walk down Bower Hill towards the centre of Oxspring. We then follow footpaths towards Thurgoland Bridge and Cheese Bottom, passing under the Romptickle Viaduct (look for the engraved stone following the accidental death of a construction worker) and onto Old Mill Lane towards the fishing ponds at Wortley Top Forge. We follow footpaths around the ponds and then across farmland towards Crane Moor. Passing through the village we again follow footpaths across farmland turning up towards Eastfield and eventually Dodworth Moor End where we join the Dove Valley Trail and the Trans Pennine Trail back to our starting point.
There are no long steep ascents on this walk – much of it is on tracks and footpaths across farmland which may be muddy – strong footwear and gaiters are therefore recommended. There is little road walking involved and so we should be aware of passing traffic.
The walk should take around 4.5 hours including a lunch stop.
