Leaving the Bridge Inn, we walk towards 18th century Huthwaite Hall, and continue through fields and woodland to Old Mill Lane. We use stepping stones to cross the River Don and ascend through woodland before crossing agricultural fields south-west of Oxspring village.
We make our way across more fields to Castle Dam on the outskirts of Penistone, before walking alongside Kirkwood Beck to join the Trans Pennine Trail towards Oxspring. We descend to Willow Bridge, climb Willow Lane and cross open fields to Bower Hill, from where we walk on the riverside path beside the River Don.
We pass Cheese Bottom Farm with its resident peacocks, and climb the fields to Thurgoland Bank, close to the site of the landslip which resulted in the road being closed for almost two years. Passing Thurgoland School we descend through fields to return along Huthwaite Lane to our starting point.
It is an undulating walk on good paths, predominantly through fields and woodlands. There is a short stretch along the Trans Pennine Trail and a small amount of road walking on quiet lanes. There are extensive views of the surrounding countryside throughout. There are a number of stiles along the route.
This is a moderate walk of approximately 7.5 miles which will take around 3.5 hours plus lunch stop.
