The walk sets off in a westerly direction from the car park along the TPT / Upper Don Valley trail through Huthwaite Tunnel, turning left at Black Moor crossing then left again around the farm to descend down to the first crossing of the River Don on stepping stones. We cross the River Don again on a footbridge before heading up towards Green Moor then steeply downhill through Trunce Farm (Spooky) Woods.
We then proceed back along Old Mill Lane crossing Forge Lane to follow the path alongside the river around Forge Mill Ponds to finally return across the fields to the car park.
A pleasant mix of riverside paths, woodlands, open countryside and country lanes with a little bit of a challenge thrown in.
Please note: The section down through the woods involves a tricky, steep, downhill descent on a narrow path over rocks and many exposed tree roots before re-crossing the Don on the second set of stepping stones. Not recommended if you’re not confident with this type of terrain.
The walk is approximately 5.5 miles long and should take around 2 hours including a stop for lunch. It is generally rated easy / moderate.
