From the car park, we walk out of Rowsley and walk uphill along Church Lane. We then pick up the bridle path which runs below Rowsley Moor Wood towards Bakewell. Dropping down the path we pass Coombes Farm, then pass under the viaduct before going up onto the start of the Monsal Trail, walking up to the old railway station. At this point we leave the trail and there is a steep uphill climb passing over the golf course and adjacent wood till we reach the top road by Ball Cross Farm. We then walk down Handley Lane for about half a mile admiring the excellent views of the surrounding countryside, before we take a track into the hamlet of Edensor.
We then walk in the direction of Chatsworth House, but before reaching Paines Bridge we cut across to join the path on the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (DVHW), leading towards Calton Lees. It is along here at the river side where we will stop for lunch. After lunch there is just a short walk into Calton Lees and walking around the rear of the garden centre we pick up the DVHW again, walking over open fields for our return to Rowsley.
