We start at Hade Edge, passing through fields for lovely views towards Hepworth and surrounding countryside. We descend through the village to start the ascent up Cheesegate Nab (half mile of steepish climb, most on tarmac). The views are worth the effort as we move around the hillside on good tracks and minor roads for more views of West Yorkshire, from Hullock Bank and lunch stop (weather permitting).
We then descend through woods and fields to Jackson Bridge, past historic houses, pubs and demolished old mills to Hepworth Church, to pick up the Kirklees Way through an interesting section of wooded river gorge, (care needed here – many tree roots and slippery stones especially after any rainfall).
We then have a short walk back to Hade Edge and a welcome drink at the Boshaw Trout.
This is a walk of 8.5 miles and will take about 4.5 hours with a lunch break. The middle section of the route uses different paths to ones I have used before, so there is less ascent! It remains an undulating walk, passing along short stretches of the Kirklees Way and the Barnsley Boundary Walk.
