We start the walk by going uphill from the Mustard Pot car park. We shall pass the 14th century St James’ Church, and continue with a long steady climb to be rewarded with extensive views across the valley to Underbank Reservoir.
We proceed into woodland and have another short ascent before the path levels out and overlooks Midhope Reservoir. We cross the River Porter (Little Don) and join the disused railway line, built in the late 19th century during the construction of Langsett Reservoir. Continuing through Sheephouse Wood, where we may catch the last of this year’s bluebells, and along the Northern side of Underbank Reservoir.
We then have a scenic walk across Underbank Reservoir dam wall, before following the path alongside the South side of the reservoir to return to the village of Midhopestones.
This walk uses woodland trails, bridleways, field paths and a disused railway track. There are three short stretches of minor road walking and very few stiles.
