From the car park we drop down to the River Ashop and follow it through the devastated woodland to cross over the footbridge at Fairbrook. We then have to cross the Fairbrook, which does not have a footbridge, so some of us may end up with damp feet.
The climb up Gate Side Clough is good going for most of the way but does get steep, almost 50 degrees, and rocky towards the top at Seal Stones. It is a walk though and there is no need to scramble or clamber over rocks. Once at the top we will have a short coffee break.
Moving on we head East following Blackden Edge to Madwomans Stones and drop down Crookstone Hill turning left to follow the roman road down to Alport Bridge.
The track from Alport Bridge back to the car park undulates (a lot) across Cowms Moor back to Birchen Clough.
When I did the recce there were some very nosy cows at Hayridge Farm so dogs might not be a good idea!
This is a rough walk over mixed terrain which can be wet and boggy. Some of the walk is steep and rocky.
