Start time: 10:45
Grade: Moderate
Distance: 6.5 miles
Walk description

The circular walk starts in High Hoyland, a small village with magnificent views over Cawthorne and Cannon Hall. There is a little road walking at the beginning of the walk before we cross farmland leading to Swallow Hill. We continue along paths and farm tracks and across fields to enter Cliffe Wood and arrive in Clayton West.

Our lunch stop will be at Kaye’s Millennium Green which was created in the 1890’s by prominent mill owner John Kaye, the ‘King of Clayton West’.

After lunch we continue through fields and woodlands, including Bilham Shrogg, whose name derives from the Middle English ‘shrogge’ meaning ‘bush’ or ‘brushwood’. There are impressive views north-westward to the Emley Moor mast before we climb through Hoyland Bank Wood to High Hoyland Church, now a private dwelling, and return to our starting point.

There are a number of stiles along the route.
