After a short walk on the A6015, we take the path to the moorland quarries below the Chinley Churn trig point, taking in the views of Kinder Scout and the surrounding hills. After a short walk on the stony path below the quarries we come to Overhill Road and then Dolly Lane which leads to Bugsworth Basin, the erstwhile tramway / canal interchange. Lunch will be taken here.
The Peak Forest canal provides the next part of the walk and after passing the Furness Vale marina we veer off at swing bridge No. 30. Thereafter we take the field path over to the River Goyt, following its course towards New Mills where we will encounter the present day utilisation of water power – Torr Hydro – the UK’s first community owned electric scheme and then past Torr Cotton Mill which used the River Goyt’s flow to power its spinning and weaving machines via two former water wheels. These mills will be viewed from the recently reopened Millennium Bridge.
The last part of the walk takes us briefly across New Mills centre before picking up the last 2.5 mile stretch of the walk on the Sett Valley Trail.
This is a 10.5 mile moderate walk (moderate as the majority of the walking is on flat paths) which will take approximately 5.5 hours including lunch break.
