We leave the car park and join the Penistone Boundary Walk for a short distance, before walking on field paths skirting Cubley Hall and crossing a footbridge over Cubley Brook.
We continue along quiet country roads and field edge footpaths to the hamlet of Hillside. There are views across the valley to Thurlstone and Millhouse Green villages and the wind turbines at Royd Moor.
Leaving Hillside, we have a long gradual ascent along a stony bridleway before the top of Hartcliff Tower comes into view, followed by a short steep ascent for a closer view of the tower, which, sadly, is now partially obscured by a communication mast.
We continue along a heather-lined track to Hartcliff Road and enjoy views of Langsett and Midhope Reservoirs as we descend steeply via farm tracks and fields to meet the Barnsley Boundary Walk. We climb back up the hillside for an easy return on country lanes and bridleways, and distant but clearer views of Hartcliff Tower, to enjoy a relaxing drink at Cubley Hall.
This walk has ups and downs, a good number of stiles, and uses bridleways, woodland and field paths, and minor country lanes. It will take around 4 hours plus lunch stop.
