The walk starts from the small village of Grindon. We take a track which follows the flank of a deepening valley passing Ladyside and walking through Lady Wood, down the hillside to pass over the Manifold Way. It’s then just a 5min walk up the steps to Thor’s Cave.
Thor’s Cave is a natural cave located in a steep limestone crag in the Manifold Valley. The cave entrance is a symmetrical arch 7.5 mtrs wide and 10 mtrs high giving stunning views over the whole valley.
After visiting the cave we return to the Manifold Way and walk alongside the river for about one mile towards Beeston Tor. Just after this the track splits and we take the right track walking south alongside the dry bed of the River Hamps. An easy 2 mile stroll takes us down towards Woodhead Farm where the valley begins to broaden out. It is just past here where we leave the Manifold Way and take a track west toward Waterhouses up a narrowing meadow this is where we will stop for lunch.
Carrying on up the meadow we pass over a style then climb up the bank. A short walk down the back road take us to Brookhouse Farm. Passing through the yard we pick up Slade Lane and walking north we pass Oldfields Farm and Deepdale Farm on our return to Grindon.
A brand new walk for all members who like something a bit different. A little further to travel (about 45 mins from Sheffield) but well worth the journey.
