View of Birchen Clough
Birchen Clough, Greenfield, Greater Manchester
Date: Sunday, 1st June 2025
Start time: 10:00
Grade: Strenuous
Distance: 12.5 miles
Walk description

From Greenfield we walk around the northern edges of Dovestone and Greenfield reservoirs before climbing up Birchen Clough to Raven Stones and the famous Trinnacles. This includes a grade 1 scramble over rocks beside Birchen Brook. We then follow the edge, past Ashway Rocks to Chew Reservoir which once held the record as the highest reservoir in England. We continue along the edge to Alphin Pike before descending to Hey Top, and then back to Greenfield.

In fine weather, this is a spectacular walk with fine views of the reservoirs and Saddleworth Moor. In poor weather, the edges are exposed so suitable clothing to protect against rain and wind is essential.
