We meet in the small pretty village of Fishlake, situated in the north east corner of South Yorkshire. It could be described as being on an island, as it is surrounded by a network of rivers, canals, drains and ditches. Going back in its history, Fishlake was once a port on the River Don. Names of buildings in the village still bear witness to that,e.g. The Landing, Old Anchor Inn and Custom House. The doorway of the church of St. Cuthbert has been described as “perhaps the most lavishly decorated in Yorkshire” and is of national importance.
The area we will be walking in has an altitude above sea level of only 4-7 metres. We follow footpaths, farm tracks, green lanes and minor roads along the River Don and through farmland to meet up with the New Junction Canal (last commercial canal built in the UK in 1905 to transport coal from the nearby coal fields). This could be the straightest 2.5 miles you have ever walked! From here we follow the old course of the River Don, back to Fishlake. This is a different but interesting landscape to walk in, “flat as a pancake”. Come along and get a surprise!
This is a walk of 10 miles and will take about 5 hours with lunch.
