We start at Upper Denby, the “farmstead of the Danes” which was founded shortly after the Danes conquered York in AD 862. We leave the village via Denby Delf descending quite steeply over heathland towards Square Wood Reservoir.
After passing Wood Farm we continue downhill on the Dearne Way to cross the river at Carr Bridge and pass through the Upper Dearne Woodlands. We walk uphill through the St Nicholas churchyard to Upper Cumberworth, go across fields to reach Denby Dale and into Wither Wood to join the Kirklees Way to Skelmanthorpe.
The old drovers’ road returns us to the outskirts of Denby Dale where we cross the A635 Barnsley beside Inkerman Court, named after the famous Crimean battle. We cross under the Sheffield to Huddersfield railway line and continue uphill over fields to our starting point and drinks at The George Inn.
This is a walk which uses well-defined paths through heathland, woodlands and fields and passes through the villages of Upper Cumberworth, Skelmanthorpe and Denby Dale. There are extensive views throughout much of the walk.
It will take approx 4 hours including lunch stop. There are a number of stiles along the route.
