We travel out on the 10.12 am train from Silkstone Common to Denby Dale, a very scenic journey, for this moderate linear walk of 7-7.5 miles back to Silkstone Common. It will take around 4 hours plus lunch stop.
It is an undulating walk with a good number of stiles and uses woodland footpaths, minor country lanes and crosses open farmland. We are surrounded by sweeping countryside for much of the walk.
The cost of the train journey is £3.80, however the South Yorkshire Senior Concession reduces the cost to £1.90 so don’t forget your bus pass if you are ‘lucky’ enough to have one!
We descend from Denby Dale station and walk through the centre of the village, passing the Pie Hall, before climbing out of the Dale to reach Exley Gate.
We continue through fields and woodland to Gunthwaite Bridge and join the Penistone Boundary Walk which takes us over fields and country lanes to Pye Flatts on the outskirts of Hoylandswaine.
We cross the A628 Barnsley Road for a final ascent through woodland and fields to return for a well-earned drink at the Station Inn, Silkstone Common.
