Leaving Conisbrough Station there is a steep but very short ascent to reach Conisbrough Castle. The castle is an 11th century Medieval fortification that is run by English Heritage. We will walk round the perimeter of the castle spending about 10 minutes for us to look round or use the facilities on site.
We continue out of Conisbrough by good footpaths onto open ground. There is a steady incline (total ascent approximately 150ft) on this part of the walk to reach the high point of our walk. We get extensive views to Old Denaby and beyond from this path. Descending gradually into Old Denaby we reach the Mexborough Canal where will have our lunchstop.
We continue along the canal towpath to reach the lock where the canal joins the River Don. After crossing over by the lock there is a muddy section of path (1/4 mile) which is passable with care. We then pick up the Trans Pennine Trail where there is a short but steep ascent back to the cars at Conisbrough Station.
There are 2 railways lines to cross on the route via footbridges. Each bridge has approximately 30 steps up and down at the other side.
The paths are well defined throughout though muddy in places particularly after Mexborough Lock.
