The walk starts from Richmond cricket ground, as we visit Friary Gardens, go past the Georgian Theatre and exit the town via Newbiggin. There is a short walk along the road to gain access to the banks of the beautiful River Swale. We pass over a footbridge and walk past a wooded area known as Round Howe, through a riverside meadow to an elevated section through Billy Bank Wood (short inclines and steps in this section). We get views of Culloden Tower, pass over Richmond Bridge to the Falls (great photo’s here!).
We cross over Mercury Bridge to the old Railway Station, which has been restored as a community resource including a cafe, bakers, and brewery. After pausing here we continue along the old railway line, to cross another bridge to Easby Abbey for another brief stop, before continuing along the riverbank back to Mercury Bridge to gain access to the cobbled Market Square. We finish the walk by promenading along the elevated Castle Walk into the top of the Market Square. Saturday is market day so should be bustling with activity.
It is an easy / moderate walk of 6 miles and will take about 3.5 hours. It is possible to leave the walk to do your own exploration at around 3 and 4 miles if you so choose.
